About the Region
The Central Goulburn irrigation area in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District stretches from Tatura in the south-east past Stanhope, Girgarre and Merrigum to Tongala in the north-west.
The area is part of the Goulburn River Basin, which covers 16 192 square kilometres from the Great Dividing Range to the Murray River. Agriculture in this region includes major dairying centres, fruit production, sheep and cropping.
There are approximately 4 132 irrigation properties in this region and 1 352 kilometres of open irrigation channels. The average volume of water used for irrigation in this region is 172 gigalitres per year.
Planned Works
NVIRP aims to install approximately 70 kilometres of channel lining, 1 086 regulator gates and 1 788 metres in this region.
