About the Region
The Loddon Valley irrigation area in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District stretches from Echuca in the north-east past Rochester in the south-east to Lockington in the west.
The area is part of the Loddon River Basin, which covers approximately 15 320 square kilometres from the Great Dividing Range to the Murray River. Land use includes sheep and cattle grazing; crop production; fruit, vegetable and forest industries and pig and poultry farming. Crops including wheat, barley, oats and hay are grown in this area using irrigation.
There are approximately 568 irrigation properties in this region and 1 744 kilometres of open irrigation channels. The average volume of water used for irrigation in this region is 92 gigalitres per year.
Planned Works
The NVIRP project aims to install approximately 58 kilometres of channel lining, 564 regulator gates and 977 metres in this region.
