Murray Valley

About the Region 

The Murray Valley irrigation area in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District stretches from Cobram in the east to Strathmerton in the west.

The area is part of the Upper Murray River Basin, which covers 15 280 square kilometres in Victoria and New South Wales. The Murray River forms the north and east sides of the Victorian part of the Basin and the southern boundary extends across the Great Dividing Range. Land in this area is mainly used for dairying, grazing and forestry.

There are approximately 2 181 irrigation properties in this region and 930 kilometres of open irrigation channels. The average volume of water used for irrigation in this region is around 363 gigalitres per year.

Planned Works

NVIRP aims to install approximately 120 kilometres of channel lining, 669 regulator gates and 1 237 metres in this region.
