Shepparton

About the Region

The Shepparton irrigation area in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District stretches from near Nathalia in the north to past Shepparton in the south.

The area is part of the Goulburn River Basin, which covers 16 192 square kilometers from the Great Dividing Range to the Murray River. Agriculture in this region centres on dairying and fruit production.

There are approximately 2 408 irrigation properties in this region and 723 kilometres of open irrigation channels. The average volume of water used for irrigation in this region is approximately 72 gigalitres per year.

Planned Works

The FutureFlow alliance between Goulburn-Murray Water, Sinclair Knight Merz, Comdain and Transfield Services was established in early 2008 to deliver works for the Shepparton Modernisation project. This project focussed on upgrading regulators and Dethridge meter outlets with automated gates and meters.

Stage 1 of the NVIRP project did not include provision for modernisation works in the Shepparton irrigation area, however Stage 2 funding approval announced in November 2010 does provide for further modernisation works to be completed in this area.

Stage 2 works will focus on reducing redundant assets including meters or sections of channel, then re-connecting the majority of landowners back to the modernised backbone.
