About the Region
The Torrumbarry irrigation area in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation District stretches from Torrumbarry on the River Murray in the south-east to Swan Hill and Nyah in the north-west, encompassing the rural towns of Cohuna, Leitchville, Gunbower and Kerang. The region is bordered by the River Murray and Gunbower Forest to the north and the Pyramid-Boort Irrigation Area to the south.
The area is well known for its environmental significance. Key water bodies such as the Kow Swamp, Lake Charm, Reedy Lakes, Kangaroo Lake and Lake Boga are located in the region, providing substantial water storage capacity and fostering a diverse range of flora and fauna.
The area is part of three basins: the Mallee, Avoca and Loddon basins. These basins cover a combined area of over 40 000 square kilometres from Mildura to Bendigo. The main forms of land use in these basins include dairying; dryland agriculture; grazing and cropping; fruit, vegetable and forest industries and pig and poultry farming.
There are approximately 3 249 irrigation properties in this region and 1 569 kilometres of open irrigation channels. The average volume of water used for irrigation in this region is approximately 334 gigalitres per year.
Planned Works
NVIRP aims to install approximately 73 kilometres of channel lining, 546 regulator gates and 1 212 metres in this region.
