Strategic Connections Projects are part of NVIRP's broader Connections Program. The projects are aimed at connecting landowners located downstream of the main channel network, or ‘backbone', to this modernised system.
The projects involve working with close to 14 000 landowners to:
- Develop individual connections options
- Design the most appropriate solution for each farm
- Communicate with farmers that require mutual support for connections solutions
- Allow adequate time for decision-making and
- Schedule and deliver infrastructure works.
The projects commenced in late 2010 and were originally scheduled for completion in June 2013. With the recent announcement of an additional $1.2 billion of funding through Stage 2, it is expected that this program will be extended to create more options for irrigators and more time for important decision-making about the future of their farms.
Currently there are 45 Strategic Connections Projects underway. Over the coming months 30 public meetings will be held in specific regions. By the end of 2011, over 75 dedicated projects will have been discussed at individual meetings to begin the process of connecting landowners to the backbone channels.
More information will be provided to landowners involved in Strategic Connections Projects via mail and local community meetings.
