Renewing the irrigation delivery system may require reconfiguring farm irrigation that connects to the new system. As an example, a farmer with six outlets on the property may choose to move to one or two outlets under a modern system, requiring an adjustment of farm layout. The benefit for the irrigator will be increased confidence in their watering and ultimately, greater on-farm productivity.
Improving On-farm Efficiency
In April 2008 the Victorian Government launched the Future Farming strategy to improve the productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of farm businesses.
Victoria's irrigated agricultural industries need to be internationally competitive which requires irrigation infrastructure to be upgraded to:
- provide modern, efficient water delivery services to support 21st century farm operations
- be managed cost-effectively
- improve water delivery efficiency.
The Department of Primary Industries will manage the work program coming out of the Future Farming strategy in partnership with other government departments and non-government organisations. Improved water use remains a consistent theme. Incorporating the challenges of climate change while boosting productivity means water availability and sustainability are paramount – NVIRP is at the forefront of meeting these challenges.
